I wanted to design a pulley that was compact, strong and didn't require any hardware. My original no-hardware design was OK for decorative purposes, but when I actually lifted objects, the friction melted the plastic really quickly, after which the pulley didn't turn so nicely. From this, I concluded that hardware is required for a functional pulley. Since I had some 608 bearings kicking around, I incorporated one into the design.
